Speech Assessment

  • Provides information regarding articulation and phonological skills

  • Speech sounds that are produced in error

  • In what context the speech sound errors exist (words, phrases, sentences, conversation)

  • Stimulability of sounds produced in error - when given strategies to assist in correct productions, which sounds are they able to produce

  • Speech intelligibility - what percentage of their speech is understood in conversational speech

  • Other diagnoses that may contribute to the speech delay (e.g., Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders, Apraxia, Dysarthria, Ankyloglossia, etc.)

  • Oral mechanism examination to assess the condition of an individual's tongue, jaw, throat, top of mouth, teeth, and tonsils

Language Assessment

  • Looks at your child’s expressive, receptive, and pragmatic language skills

  • Considers comprehension and use of basic concepts

  • How many words your child is able to expressively use and receptively understand

  • Sentence structure and utterance length

  • Comprehension of spoken language as presented in a variety of contexts

  • Use of language for social purposes (e.g., greeting/farewells, initiating conversation, turn-taking skills, commenting, etc.)

Orofacial Myofunctional Assessment

Looks at:

  • Tongue thrust

  • Sleep disordered breathing

  • Malocclusions

  • Tethered oral tissues

  • Jaw pain

  • Oral habits (thumb or finger sucking, prolonged pacifier use, and nail biting)

Fluency Assessment

  • Conversational observations and/or reading tasks may be used

  • You may be asked to bring recordings of your child talking at home or in a comfortable environment

  • Typical or atypical disfluencies will be noted

  • The type of disfluencies, frequency, and severity of disfluencies

  • If your child’s disfluencies are age-appropriate or developmental

Feeding Assessment

  • Review of parent concerns, medical history and background information about symptoms and behavior related to feeding

  • Observation of motor movements while your child is eating and assessing against typical development

  • Signs of irregularity or any unusual movements or positions during feeding

  • Signs of behavioral/sensory issues with food or food refusals

  • Signs of “picky eating” or food aversions

Tethered Oral Tissues Assessment

  • Review of concerns, medical history and background information about symptoms related to tongue, lip, and buccal ties

  • Physical examination to visually inspect the oral cavity and assess the range of motion of the tongue and lips. We will also check for any signs of restriction or abnormalities in the appearance of the tissues.

  • Functional assessment to determine if the tethered tissues are impacting functions like speech, swallowing, and oral hygiene.

  • Based on the evaluation findings, we may refer to specialists, such as a pediatric dentist, ENT, allergist, craniosacral therapist, physical therapist, chiropractor, for further evaluation and possible treatment.

  • Academic achievement

  • Learning and processing skills

  • Attention and executive functioning

  • Emotional and behavioral functioning

  • Social and adaptive skills

  • Language and communication skills

  • Sensory and motor skills
